Vacation Rental vs. Hotel in Columbus Ohio — Here’s the Honest Comparison

Whenever someone asks me whether they should book a hotel or a vacation rental for their Columbus trip, I try to give them an actual answer instead of the diplomatic “it depends.” So here it is.

For most Columbus trips — weekend getaways, group visits, event weekends, bachelorette trips, graduation, Ohio State games — a vacation rental is going to be the better experience. Hotels make sense when you’re a solo business traveler who wants points and a 24-hour gym. For almost everything else, the math and the experience both favor a short-term rental.

Here’s how the comparison actually breaks down.

Price Per Person Is Not Even Close

Hotels in Columbus price by room. Vacation rentals price by property. If you’re traveling with two, three, or four people, the per-person cost of a vacation rental often beats a hotel by 30 to 50 percent — and that’s before you factor in the money you save on food because you have a kitchen.

A Columbus hotel near the Convention Center or Short North during a busy weekend runs $200 to $400 per night for a single room. A vacation rental in the same area with two bedrooms, a full kitchen, and a living room often runs $250 to $350 per night total — split two or three ways, the difference is substantial.

At Jungle House, we also price lower than OTA platforms when you book direct at junglehouse.org. Airbnb and VRBO charge guests a service fee that typically adds 14 to 20 percent on top of the listed rate. We don’t charge that when you book with us directly, which means the gap between “hotel price” and “what you actually pay” is even wider.

The Kitchen Changes Everything

This feels like a small thing until you’re feeding four people in Columbus for three days. Breakfast at a restaurant for four people is $60 to $80. Coffee runs are $20 to $25. Lunches add up.

A vacation rental with a kitchen means you stock it with groceries on day one and you control at least half your meals for the trip. On a four-night stay for a group of four, this realistically saves $200 to $300.

We even offer a grocery stocking service at Jungle House — arrive to a fully stocked fridge for $75. It sounds like a small luxury but it completely reframes the first few hours of a trip.

Space Matters More Than People Expect

Two people sharing a 350 square foot hotel room for three days is a very different experience than two people sharing a 900 square foot apartment with a separate bedroom, living room, and bathroom. The difference only grows as the group size increases.

This is especially true for bachelorette groups, family visits, and graduation weekends where the social experience of the trip is the point. You want a living room to gather in. You want a kitchen table. You want to not have every conversation happen on the bed because it’s the only furniture in the room.

Location: Hotels Win on Predictability, Rentals Win on Character

Hotels near major venues exist because location is their product. They’re there, they’re consistent, and you know what you’re getting.

Vacation rentals can vary a lot — which is either a feature or a problem depending on who’s managing the properties.

At Jungle House, every property is in the Short North, 5 minutes from the Convention Center and 10 minutes from Nationwide Arena and Ohio State. So the location advantage hotels usually claim doesn’t really apply here. You get the same proximity plus a full apartment, plants, personality, and a host with 5,800 five-star reviews behind them.

The Bottom Line

Hotels in Columbus are fine. Vacation rentals in Columbus — specifically in the Short North, booked direct to avoid OTA fees — are better for most trips by almost every measure that actually affects how the trip feels.

We’ve hosted 22,500 guests who’ve collectively left over 5,800 five-star reviews. The plants will be there when you arrive. The parking is free. And you’re paying at least 10% less than you would on Airbnb.
